How can I get my character, like in a newsroom to look at camera 1 - then look at camera 2 and then back to camera 1 without slowly moving his head to camera 2 in preparation for the switch and then looking back to camera 1 in preparation for that switch.

So, scene - Straight on.  I want him to turn to camera 2 and then back to camera 1.  I have the camera switch in the keyframes, but "look at" - I can't seem to keep his head staring at the camera that is filming him.  Instead, he starts to look at the other camera in prep for the switch.  (tweening? I think it is called in Flash).

Thank you in advance.

Rodney

You've Posted this in the Wishful Features Forum. It should be in iClone General Forum;)

There's probably a more elegant way, but I always Select the relevant Look At again as soon as the Character starts turning their head & keep repeating it, each time their head turns .

If there's a Transform Keyframe for each Camera Look At. Copy the first Keyframe & Paste it immediately before the next Keyframe. Ie; you're Marking In & out & holding the Transform position for the duration.

Anyone-else?

Figured it out - for those who may want to know.

Go to the timeline and highlight all entries in the Look At.  Then right click and set the transition curve to "step".

Of course, what you're asking for isn't physically possible.

In a real-world news room, the people need to turn their head in less that 1/30th of a second.  If you want to start wtih "looking directly into camera 1" and then cut to "looking directly into camera 2," that would have to be done via an EDIT in the real world.

Regardless, I'm glad you figured out how do do what you wanted tod.

True, in the real sense of the action, but the way it was working the character was talking and while I still had the first camera on him he was slowly moving his head towards the 2nd one. That is not what I had expected. I expected a turn to the 2nd camera when it came on in the timeline.

Granted, in reality he would move his head, but not until the camera switched to the next camera.

Using the step curve gave me the action I desired. Thanks! I'm sure I'll have more questions...

I always just do two "Look At" keyframes one at the beginning and a second just before I would want them to turn. You can always go the the timeline and tweak the timing in the "Constraint/Look At" tab for the avatar :D

How are you doing single keyframe for look at?  I'm always open to learning, especially if it is easier.   See the image I attached - This is my look at. You'll see I don't get just a keyframe.  I get this long path.  I tried to cut and move, and when I was able to separate them and reduce it to just one frame the character immediately turned his head back on the next frame.

Appreciate the help.  Thanks.

1) Use FACE KEY in Facial Animation to shift eyes to one side.
2) Open TIMELINE.Copy the Key in FACE to another frame on the time line. That will help keep the eyes look at a camera for some time.
3) The use FACE KEY again to shift eyes to another direction and then back to normal position.

Click on the frame before Look At 2 begins (to get the Timeline Cursor at the correct Frame) & re-Select Look At 1 again, to hold it's position (As per my first & Mark's Post) Repeat for other Look Ats.

FWIW - Look At doesn't work for one Scene in my current Project. So I Edited the Character's head & body Motion Layer. See Screenshots to be added  (which are just Storyboarding at the moment & not the final result). If you have a problem with Look At, you could try that instead.

Good suggestion on using the motion layer. Thank you!
